Liberation of the city of Carentan by the 101st Airborne

By the end of the initial phase of Operation Overlord, Carentan had become the keystone linking Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, enabling the Allied forces to make a unified advance. The liberation of the town was entrusted to the 101st Airborne. During this 2-hour jeep tour, follow the advance of Allied units after the capture of Utah Beach towards Carentan on June 8, 1944.   • Dead Man’s Corner

    Nicknamed after a tragic event that took place there.

  • Château de Bel Esnault

    Many paratroopers have landed near this château, located on the outskirts of drop zone D. Such was the case of Colonel Howard Johnson, one of the heroes of the Battle of Carentan.

  • Drop zone

    Drop zone D, also known as the cursed drop zone, was to house a regiment of the 101st Airborne.

  • Angoville-au-Plain

    On June 6, 1944, two American paratroopers, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore, transformed the village church into an aid dtation. To this day, the church bears the scars of the battle.

  • Purple Heart Lane

    The gateway to the liberation of Carentan, then surrounded by flooded marshes. It witnessed intense fighting, including a bayonet charge on June 11, 1944 led by Lt-Colonel Robert Cole.

  • Carentan

    A strategic point during the Battle of Normandy, connecting the Allied landing beaches, Carentan was liberated on June 12, 1944.
